To the discovery of Cupa: a world leader in the production of natural slate
Thursday, March 27, 2014Description :
Today, one of every three slates used in the world is produced by CUPA, which in almost 50 years has established itself as the undisputed leader in the manufacture and marketing of slates thanks to the quality of its raw material : A natural shale stone. A hegemony that CUPA maintains and cultivates thanks to an exceptional quality policy, an ongoing search for innovation and a strong commitment to sustainable development.

Discovery of a proven success story ... and an overview of the CUPA offer.

CUPA, at the top of excellence ...

With an export volume of more than 80%, Spain is the world's largest producer of slate. Present in twenty countries constituting the market of slate, CUPA proposes, since its creation in 1968, a stone of shale of very high quality. Its level of expertise and demand made it possible for this Iberian company to become the world leader in the slate market. For more than four decades, CUPA has been involved in 16 quarries and 22 workshops where modern technologies and ancestral know-how are combined to guarantee a remarkable purity and quality of the CUPA slates (1 slate out of 3 sold in the world is a slate CUPA).

CUPA, based in France for more than 40 years, puts all its know-how at the service of its various partners through a network of collaborators responsible for the routing and marketing of slates through materials trading. CUPA France, with its national network and its 100 employees on the Hexagon, is definitely positioning its customers at the heart of its concerns thanks in particular to an efficient and pro-active field team in direct contact with project owners, Architects and craftsmen roofers.

A very anticipated supply alternative on the French market due to the economic difficulties of exploiting the natural slate of the French subsoil.

The slate: aesthetics and performance for this 100% natural material!

A noble and totally ecological material, the schist stone has incomparable technical and aesthetic properties. Unlike most materials, slate, once extracted from the deposits, requires no chemical treatment: its natural characteristics are such that only exfoliation work is necessary before the installation by the roofers. True gift of nature: it remains in its purest state ...

At CUPA, the slates are worked with the utmost care: from their extraction of the quarries to the cleavage where each stone is carved manually by a Master Splitter, in the strictest respect of the traditions.

Ultra-powerful, strong and insulating, the slate combines exceptional properties: waterproof, non-porous, ingieve and unalterable, it resists to the onslaught of time ... Thus, bad weather has no hold on roofs and facades Which have a lifespan of more than 100 years. Irrefutable proof of longevity: the covers made more than a century ago and which still today retain all the specifics of a recently laid slate.

This natural stone also demonstrates a great capacity of adaptation (shapes, unevenness, orientation ...) and guarantees a perfect finish while satisfying all the architectural requirements.

Moreover, its elegant dark color palette, oscillating from dark blue to anthracite gray, passing by stones with lighter shades, represents a considerable asset especially for the owners and architects of the Historical Monuments.

Finally, the CUPA slates have an unparalleled overall cost: secular material, the maintenance costs of the slate are virtually non-existent.

Traceability, certifications and labels ... the signature of slates CUPA

If the success of CUPA, the flagship of the slate quarries, lies in the total control of the whole production chain, ranging from the sounding of the soil to the commercialization of the slates to the four corners of the globe, to the extraction, Shaping and transport, it also results from a remarkable implementation of its quality policy.

Indeed, the quality of CUPA's products and services, a real added value in today's highly globalized, complex and diverse natural stone industry, meets all the required standards. As a guarantee of quality and seriousness, CUPA has the ISO 9001 version 2000 certification, the NF Mark label issued by the National Testing Laboratory (LNE) and the CE marking.

At CUPA, an independent team works at each stage of slate processing and marketing to improve and continuously monitor quality. In order to ensure a seamless traceability, the CUPA slates remain permanently identifiable thanks to a bar code on each pallet. This follow-up results from a concerted global action between the various partners in the supply chain: the origin of the slate is indicated to the trade, the roofer and the client thanks to the Certificate of Authenticity CUPA.

Innovation at the heart of CUPA values

The R & D unit (Research & Development) aims to improve industrial processes, certify CUPA solutions and develop new products, such as the innovative THERMOSLATE®, the world's only slate thermal solar collector .

As a leader, CUPA cooperates internationally with all players in the innovation chain: research institutes, official laboratories, universities, technical consultancies, consultants and specialized companies, in order to offer products Which meet the expectations and requirements of each country.

CUPA: eco-responsible company

Alongside this innovation strategy, CUPA is part of a genuine effort to minimize the environmental impact of its activities and to maintain the ecological balance through the rational exploitation of reserves and the rehabilitation of quarries.

Thus, at CUPA, these commitments are realized by:

The drawing up of Environmental and Health Declaration Sheets (FDES), which consist in establishing an environmental balance sheet for building materials. To do this, CUPA carries out a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the slate, which details its ecological footprint during the extraction, production, transport, implementation and end-of-life stages. A result without appeal for the slates, the most respectful cover material of the nature;

The ISO 14001 certification, obtained by CUPA in 2008 for the exploitation of its quarries of slates and which designates all the standards relating to the environmental management;

The recycling of all the water used during the exfoliation cycle of the slate;

The rehabilitation of mining sites through a process of hydrosem- ination which will allow, at the end of their exploitation, a redevelopment of the local fauna and flora on the old quarries;

Transport by sea: 60% of the supply is provided by sea from Spain.

The roofing slate for individual and collective housing

The geological period and the extraction zone determine the quality and purity of a slate ...

N ° 1 of the slates, CUPA rigorously selects the natural stones extracted from its 16 quarries in San Pedro and Benuza, Galicia (the most prestigious exploitation zones today), in order to propose to its various partners three selections Of slates meeting their requirements.

Selection Excellence

Labélisée Marque NF, this selection, result of successive rigorous sorts, offers slates of very regularity in thickness and in flatness. Its easy implementation, quick and without prior sorting proves a real saving of time for slate roofing. The Excellence Selection is in full respect of the tradition of natural slate roofs and guarantees a perfect and totally homogeneous result.

Selection Slate

While respecting the criteria imposed by the NF mark of which it has the label, the Ardoisier Selection (limited edition) admits slight differences in regularity in thickness and flatness. Its implementation makes it possible to enhance the know-how of the roofer in order to obtain a homogeneous roof.

Natural selection

Originating from the same blocks as the Excellence and Ardoisier Selections, the Natural Selection has a less regular grain, characteristic that allows the slates resulting from this selection to be offered at a competitive cost, a major argument for this natural and secular material. Moreover, the Natural Selection benefits from a decennial guarantee against any change of aspect or deterioration.

The CUPA roofing slates, marketed through the Negotiated Building Materials Networks, are available in a wide variety of sizes and sizes ranging from 25 x 15 cm to 50 x 25 cm.

Slate for Historical Monuments and Heritage

The slate deposits operated by CUPA since 1892 are located in the heart of an extraction zone whose shale is of exceptional purity and of irreproachable quality, constituting the epitome of this production, Origin of the Selections Heritage, Prestige, Historical Monument, Brouillée and Pyrenees, used for the renovation of historical sites.

Selection Patrimoine

Available in thicknesses of 5 or 8 mm, the Patrimoine model is particularly suitable for private heritage buildings: mansions and charming residences. The quality and thickness of the slates resulting from the Sélection Patrimoine guarantee the roofs unequaled durability.

Prestige Selection

The Prestige Selection is recommended in the case of exceptional restorations requiring a remarkable quality, 3.8 mm thick, giving the renovated covers the finesse and grandeur of yesteryear.

Historic Monument Selection

Fruit of an intense and rigorous sorting, the Historical Monument Selection reaches the strictest demands of the owners in search of a durable roof, carried out with the greatest respect for ancestral traditions. Thus, exfoliated in a shale presenting a fine grain, conjugated to a very smooth structure, the slates of the Selection Historical Monument, proposed in 5 and 8 mm, are very appreciated in the renovation of old buildings.

Specific Models

Scrambled selections are available in 5 or 9 mm thickness as well as cofine slate models.

Selection Pyrenees

Developed in strict accordance with the Pyrenean tradition, this model faithfully meets local requirements and the expectations of the artisans of the region.

Like the rustic 'or country' slates, the Pyrenees Selection from the CUPA 5 shale, has a pronounced structure that confers character and nobility to the work.

The constant thickness of 8 mm and the variable width format also contribute to the authenticity of the cover, as close as possible to the traditions.

Natural slate on the façade

As a material with recognized performances, slate invites itself in the ITE as an entirely separate architectural element, making it possible to enhance the incomparable presence of shale on the façade of individual and collective dwellings and tertiary buildings. Its exceptional properties allow this natural stone to emerge as a technical and contemporary alternative in the exterior layout of buildings under new construction or renovation.

CUPACLAD®

CUPACLAD® solutions offer a ventilated façade system that meets the new demands of outdoor thermal insulation projects while giving the buildings an aesthetic and modern touch. Available in three versions, these systems offer an easy implementation and adapt to all architectural projects.

The slates of the CUPACLAD® 101 and CUPACLAD® 201 systems, with a thickness of 5 mm, require horizontal installation. The rafters and battens are treated autoclave and a waterproof screen is provided in order to satisfy the thermal regulations of the ventilated facades. The CUPACLAD® 301 model requires a vertical slate installation that meets the requirements of DTU 40-11 and makes the façade completely waterproof.

THERMOSLATE® - The first solar thermal panel in natural slate: ecological, aesthetic and efficient

Listening to the expectations of its various partners, CUPA has always positioned itself as a forerunner thanks to its capacity to innovate. Thus, CUPA designed THERMOSLATE®, the one and only solar thermal panel in natural slate, which was awarded in May 2013, and for four years, the valuable ses- sion of the CSTB: the Technical Advice.

THERMOSLATE® uses one of the natural properties of slate which absorbs and rebroadcasts the heat in order to redistribute it via a circuit connected to the production of hot water. The solar panel THERMOSLATE® provides 60% of the yearly requirements in ECS (Hot Water Sanitary) and contributes effectively to the heating of the house. An efficient product that requires very little maintenance.

In addition, the THERMOSLATE® natural slate panel (L. 239.3 x 1. 54.1 x 3.7 cm), integrated directly into the cover, offers undeniable aesthetic qualities since it is totally invisible.
