Plinths and buried walls: Knauf unveils 2 new low-carbon solutions

Knauf is rethinking its insulation offer for plinths and buried walls, meeting the demands of construction and, more specifically, the low-carbon objective. The new range, which will be presented at Batimat (Hall 1, K66), provides continuous insulation from the façade down to the floors and reduces thermal bridges. Whether for semi-buried or buried insulation, this new low-carbon Knauf offer (backed by an FDES environmental declaration) is 100% validated, as it has all the technical documentation required for use at the base of façades, notably in public-access buildings (ERP) and in residential and industrial buildings (Euroclass rating of the board according to the fire regulations for external thermal insulation systems).
An offer with 4 products and 2 innovations to meet every site need
The manufacturer thus offers professionals a complete range to meet every site need. The range consists of four products, including two innovations: Knauf Périboard ULTRA+, Knauf Perimaxx ULTRA, Knauf Perimaxx Resist and Knauf Therm Soubassement SE.
The first new product, intended for semi-buried insulation of plinths, Knauf Périboard ULTRA+, which replaces Knauf Périboard ULTRA 30 SE, is perfectly in line with low-carbon requirements and claims a clear reduction of its CO2 impact thanks to the use of recycled EPS in the manufacture of the insulation board and to the PEFC certification of the wood contained in the cement-bonded wood facing. Knauf Périboard ULTRA+ thus shows only 9 kg CO2/m2 over its entire life cycle (thickness 90 + 10 mm R = 2,90 m2.K/W), the lowest value observed on the market for a solution of this type! A composite board (1000 x 600 mm – i.e. 990 x 590 mm useful) with rebated edges and a smooth facing with bevelled edges, Knauf Périboard ULTRA+ is designed for the external insulation of façade bases.
It is applied to plinth walls (of categories 1, 2 and 3 as defined by DTU 20.1) on small-element masonry, cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete and concrete prewalls. Another advantage of Knauf Périboard ULTRA+ is that the composite, which claims a fire reaction rating of Euroclass B-s1, d0 (up to thickness 110 + 10 mm), is an all-in-1 product including a facing board and requiring no additional finish, for appreciable time savings during installation. Available in 8 thicknesses (40/60/70/70/90/110/130/150/175 and 195 + 10 mm), Knauf Périboard ULTRA+ delivers thermal performance of 1,25 to 6,25 m2.K/W.
The second innovation in the new Knauf offer, Knauf Perimaxx ULTRA, is an ideal, optimized answer for the insulation and drainage of buried walls at the most common burial depths (less than 4 metres), thus judiciously complementing the Knauf Perimaxx Resist solution, which can be installed down to 8 m depth. Knauf Perimaxx ULTRA is a rigid board (1265 x 615 mm overall, i.e. 1 250 x 600 mm useful) made of grey moulded EPS with four rebated edges, including a geotextile filtering facing, with diamond-shaped drainage studs to ensure the flow of run-off water. This drainage, integrated into the board (flow capacity of 1,26 litres/(s.m) under a pressure of 20 kPa), fully replaces the addition of a separate dimpled membrane for buried walls, which reduces installation time and costs.
In addition, Knauf states that Knauf Perimaxx ULTRA has a very low water and water vapour absorption capacity, a guarantee of the long-term durability of the solution's insulation performance (only 3% absorption in total immersion or through long-term water vapour diffusion). Knauf Perimaxx ULTRA also has a fire reaction rating of Euroclass E (insulation alone) according to CSTB classification report no. RA21-0102, and it has a thermal conductivity of 0,0307 W/m.K and a compressive strength at 10% deformation according to EN826 of CS (10) 100, i.e. 100 kPa minimum.
Knauf Perimaxx ULTRA has an installation method validated by an Enquête de Technique Nouvelle (new technique assessment), and its characteristics comply with the Professional Recommendations no. 2 of the CFSE and are certified by ACERMI. Knauf Perimaxx ULTRA is intended for external thermal insulation, drainage and filtration of backfill water for buried walls of categories 1, 2 and 3 in public-access buildings (ERP), residential buildings, and tertiary, industrial and agricultural buildings. It is applied to small-element masonry walls, cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, concrete prewalls and EPS insulating formwork wall systems with a technical assessment.
Finally, Knauf Perimaxx ULTRA comes in 8 thicknesses (68/88/108/128/148/168/188/ 208 mm) for thermal resistance performance ranging from 1,95 to 6,50 m2.K/W.
Knauf Perimaxx Resist and Knauf Therm Soubassement SE, the other Knauf solutions
To cover as many site configurations as possible, Knauf Perimaxx Resist and Knauf Therm Soubassement SE remain in the range. The former stands out for its integrated drainage of run-off water and also replaces the addition of a separate dimpled membrane for buried walls; it is suited to a burial depth of up to 3 basement levels, i.e. 8 metres maximum, with thermal resistances ranging from 1,85 m2.K/W (thickness 68 mm) to 6,15 m².K/W at a thickness of 208 mm.
For rendered or buried finishes, with no need for drainage, Knauf Therm Soubassement SE (1200 x 600 mm board), in addition to reducing thermal bridges, also provides effective protection of the plinth during the placement of backfill at shallow depth. With high mechanical strength, it comes in thicknesses optimized to meet regulatory requirements, with a maximum burial depth of up to 2,40 m, for thermal performance ranging from 0,55 to 11,25 m2.K/W (for thicknesses of 20 and 400 mm respectively).
Selection guide, CCTP, etc.: available Knauf resources
As is now customary, Knauf accompanies this offer with a selection guide available online. A simple, interactive tool that makes it possible to ensure the choice of the best solution for insulating plinths and buried walls according to the type of building, the wall category and the desired thermal resistance value. This guide is also complemented by a database of standard descriptions in a technical library of more than 2500 references to be included in CCTPs (special technical specifications), and by Knauf BatiChiffrage, which estimates the supply-and-install price, calculates the cost of the job and works out indicative execution times, etc.
A word from Market Manager Gérard Persuy
This new offer addresses the current challenges of designing new buildings and renovating them: reducing the carbon impact of construction products, reducing buildings' energy consumption for heating or cooling, and the durability of performance.
